Tokyo’s underground art scene has never been shy about pushing boundaries, but few events embrace the chaotic, crude, and hilariously inappropriate quite like “Gehisai: The Vulgar and Obscene Exhibition” (下品で最低).
Returning for its ninth installment, the adults-only exhibition will take place April 3–5, 2026, at Design Festa Gallery in Harajuku — one of Tokyo’s most iconic hubs for independent and experimental art.
As the name suggests, this is not your typical gallery show.
The exhibition celebrates artwork that is intentionally “vulgar and terrible” in the most entertaining ways possible — crude humor, absurd eroticism, bizarre fetishes, and the kind of mischievous creativity that feels like a group of friends showing off the most embarrassing pages of their teenage sketchbooks.
Or as the organizers describe it:
“An exhibition of things you could never tell your parents about.”
A Playground for Tokyo’s Weirdest Adult Creativity
Unlike many fetish or underground art events, Gehisai isn’t trying to present itself as serious fine art.
Instead, it encourages artists to lean into something more playful — something closer to what the organizers jokingly describe as a “middle school dirty magazine bragging contest.”
That means visitors can expect a mix of:
• absurd erotic illustrations
• strange fetish-inspired objects
• bizarre humor pieces
• experimental installations
• playful, chaotic underground art
The exhibition often blends comedy and shock value, creating an atmosphere that feels less like a traditional gallery and more like a secret adult playground of imagination and mischief.
And yes — as the event repeatedly reminds visitors — you must be 18 or older to enter.
What to Expect
Each edition of the exhibition brings together a wide range of independent artists working in different mediums, from illustration and sculpture to multimedia and experimental installations.
Confirmed participants for this year include creators such as:
• あがかん
• 糸氏こもも
• ウルトラマンコニシ
• おしゅうまいちゃん
• かにのおむらいす
• コドモオジサン
• ダンゴムシ
• 夏芽みのり
• ふぇろみコルセット
• 漏妄想発明家 ZAWAWORKS
• 山口哲志
and many more.
Visitors may also encounter unusual exhibits like the intriguingly named “Foot Torture Experiment – 足裏拷問実験場.”
If past exhibitions are any indication, the event will feature a mixture of equal parts crude humor, erotic imagination, and surreal nonsense.
A Not-So-Secret Adult Exhibition
The event’s promotional material describes the exhibition as:
“A secret exhibition where adults cover children’s eyes.”
Visitors will be required to sign a short agreement upon entry confirming they are over 18 years old and acknowledging that the exhibition may contain content that some people might find offensive or shocking.
In other words — enter at your own risk.
