Tokyo’s Crossdressing Josou Bars and Gender-Bending Maid Cafés

by TokyoLoveDistrict

Tokyo nightlife is full of strange and fascinating subcultures, and josou (女装)—crossdressing and gender-bending fashion—is one of the most unique.

In recent years, “femboy” aesthetics and otokonoko (男の娘) characters—boys who present as cute girls—have exploded in popularity, especially in anime, manga, and online communities. These characters blur the line between masculine and feminine, combining soft, feminine fashion with playful charm.

But what if you could actually hang out and have drinks with real-life femboys?

In Tokyo, you can!

Across the city, a growing number of josou bars and concept cafés feature performers who embody this aesthetic—from convincing otokonoko maids in Akihabara to stylish gender-bending hosts in Shibuya.

Here are a few places where you can experience Tokyo’s femboy and josou café culture for yourself.

Mahō ni Kakerarete – A Fantasy Crossdressing Café in Ikebukuro

One of Tokyo’s more playful josou cafés is Mahō ni Kakerarete (まほうにかけられて) in Ikebukuro.

The café’s theme is that the staff are boys who have been magically turned into girls by a curse.

Despite the comedic premise, many visitors are surprised by how “convincing” the performers are. With detailed makeup, elaborate outfits, and polished presentation, some guests say they would never guess the staff are male.

Outfits range widely:

• School uniforms
• Lolita fashion
• Punk and alternative styles

The café sits near Otome Road, Ikebukuro’s famous anime and manga district popular with female otaku.
